If you are staying in Athens and you want to spend a few hours enjoying the beauty of Attica, the best option to do so, is through the Private Half Day Tour to Marathon.
Marathon is one of the most important and significant places not only of Greek history but also the whole western civilization as well.
Enjoy the drive to the Marathon lake and also visit the place where the Athenian army bravely fought against the huge army of the Persian Empire and won in 490 BCE.
Itinerary
Starting from Athens we will be heading north and after a 45’ drive via the north outskirts of Athens we will be stopping at the Marathon Lake, an artificial lake, which was constructed as a dam, at the junction of the rivers Haradros and Varnavas in 1929, in order to cover the water supply needs of the city of Athens.
You can have coffee or refreshments at the area’s beautiful restaurant, with a view of the lake and continue the way to the town of Marathon. Marathon was known as the place of one of the most important battles in History, in which the allied Greek Forces lead by the great Athenian General Miltiades and his smart tactics, managed to defeat the army of the Persian Empire (490 BC).
While in Marathon, you will also be visiting the battlefield, the tomb of the 192 Athenian soldiers, the tomb of the 11 Plataieis and the archeological museum. Additionally, we will be visiting the museum of the Marathon Run, the 42.2 km/26.2 miles run, which was instituted in commemoration of the run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, the messenger who announced the victory to Athens and died after saying “ΝΕΝΙΚIΚΑΜΕΝ” (“We have won!”).
Before returning to Athens you can have lunch at a restaurant at Marathon’s beach.
