The best way to explore the outskirts of Athens and the beauty of both Attica’s mountains and Attica’s coast is the Private Full Day Tour to Marathon and Sounio. Itinerary

Starting from Athens we will be heading north and after a 45’ drive via the north outskirts of Athens we will be stopping at the Marathon Lake, an artificial lake came of a dam, which was constructed at the junction of the rivers Haradros and Varnavas in 1929, in order to cover the water supply needs of the city of Athens.
You can have a coffee or a drink at the restaurant with a view of the lake and continue the way to the town of Marathon known as the place of one of the most important battles in History, in which the allied Greek Forces lead by the great Athenian General Miltiades and his smart tactics, managed to defeat the army of the Persian Empire (490 BC).
We will also be visiting the battlefield, the tomb of the 192 Athenian soldiers, the tomb of the 11 Plataieis and the archeological museum. Additionally, we will be visiting the museum of the Marathon Run, the 42.2 km/26.2 miles run, which was instituted in commemoration of the run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, the messenger who announced the victory to Athens and died after saying “ΝΕΝΙΚIΚΑΜΕΝ” (“We have won!).
Leaving Marathon, we will be driving south and an hour later we will finally reach the south edge of Attica, Cape Sounio where the Athenians in 440 BC built the temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea.
Up on the rock, where the temple of Poseidon is located, you will enjoy a great open view of the Aegean Sea and probably the best sunset of your life.
You can also have lunch or dinner at one of the restaurants, ideal for tasting fresh fish and seafood. The drive from Sounio to Athens by the coastal Poseidon Avenue is about 70 km all by the sea and across the south suburbs of Athens. The journey is one of the best around the prefecture of Attica and fills you with beautiful images of the sea glittering from the sunlight as well as small sandy beaches.
A necessary stop is the Vouliagmeni Lake with its healing mineral underground springs and its unique beauty.

Tips

Prefer to wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
Take a water bottle with you. You will find plenty of them at the vehicle.
Photography is allowed during the tour. Don’t lose a chance to take some nice pictures.
Find a good spot and prepare your camera before the sunset in Sounio.
